Ruth Graham

I came across this article about the death of Ruth Graham, the wife of evangelist Billy Graham.  She died Thursday at the age of 87.  When asked by someone how she was able to tolerate her husband’s frequest absences due to his mission work, she said, “I’d rather have a little of Bill than a lot of any other man.”

That is absolutely beautiful.  :)

Go, Girl

gogirl.jpg

I mentioned in a previous post about two recent church sermons speaking directly to my situation:  one related to my Irish friend and the other related to my apartment search.  After church today I bought the sermon cd’s relating to those topics.  I sat in my car in the parking lot of Borders and listened to both of those cd’s.  Those sermons reaffirmed in me that God is with me and that all would be ok.

When I was done listening, I went into the bookstore, not really there for any reason other than to avoid going home any earlier than was necessary.  I won’t elaborate on this, other than we are three roommates and lately there have been four.  Oh, the joys of sharing a place with single men!  Not.

Aeschylus Poem

Even in our sleep,
pain which cannot forget
falls drop by drop upon the heart until…
in our despair,
against our will,
comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.

Dr. Seuss

drseuss.jpgI was watching an autobiography on the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the author of the Dr. Seuss books we all know and love so much as children (and yes, even as adults!).

In one of those ironies of life, he never had children of his own and when asked about it, he’d give this standard answer:

“You continue to have them and I’ll just entertain them.”

The truth of the matter was that his first wife could not have children.  I didn’t catch some of the background about this, but she committed suicide.  He eventually remarried and during his second marriage he began writing books with more profound messages, gleaning from topics like global warming and the cold war.

When asked in his later years (a few weeks before his death) if there was any last message he wanted to get out there, he said:

“We can, and we must, do better than this.”

I really like this quote.  Probably more so because I understand where it came from.  Watch the PBS documentary.  It’s inspiring and well worth it!

I was searching online about Dr. Seuss and found this other quote.  It’s just as good!

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
